Project: Correcting a Failed Concrete Scan

Xradar™ were recently hired by a Vancouver based engineering firm to provide a second opinion on a concrete scan performed by another company.

This is becoming increasingly common and the issue with GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) is that it is currently an unregulated industry, which means that anyone can technically purchase the equipment and begin scanning.

This can result in major issues for companies and leads to a lack of trust surrounding the industry. In an attempt to counter these growing concerns, we developed Xradar™, an advanced imaging capability, utilizing GPR technology. Xradar™ has the ability to accurately locate objects beneath the surface that GPR cannot. In addition, only fully trained technicians are allowed to carry out Xradar™ scans, meaning that unlike any other company, we can guarantee the results of our scans.

Situation

One of our technicians was recently called to provide a second opinion on a Vancouver construction site, where an engineer needed to clear a hole for coring.

The area had been scanned by another company, however, the engineer expressed concerns about the accuracy of the scan.

Solution

Our trained technician carried out a scan of the area using Xradar™ and the engineer’s concerns were justified. In the images below you can clearly see the difference in the detection capabilities of GPR in comparison to Xradar™.

The proposed core location is highlighted with a black circle. Figure 1 does indicate the general layout of the top rebar, however, it is unable to see past the ‘shadowing’ created by this layer. In Figure 2 Xradar™ was able to see past this shadowing, meaning that our technician could accurately mark out top rebar (green), electrical conduits (red), and bottom rebar (blue).

Should the proposed core have gone ahead as originally intended it would have cur through an electrical conduit, resulting in costly damage and more project time to correct the error.
